HOW AM I ABLE TO PREVENT OR AVOID AN ANKLE INJURY WHEN I PLAY AFL?
Wearing a Bauerfeind brace or ankle support can minimise your chances of an AFL injury by providing enhanced stability, proprioception and moisture-wicking medical-grade compression. Some of the most common forms of injury while playing AFL include runner’s knee, hamstring strain, ACL strain, ankle sprain and contusion. AFL is known for its high level of physical body contact. By not wearing any protection except for the occasional mouth guard, players are at a high risk of injury.
Common causes include collision, overuse, unstable landings and sharp movement. Bauerfeind ankle braces help to promote blood flow with the use of our 3D weaved medical grade compression, something not found when using simple neoprene sleeves and braces. The MalleoTrain S ankle brace is ideal for AFL as an alternative to strapping. This added support will help stabilise your joint without limiting your ability to handball, hospital kick, and score goals.
HOW TO TREAT AN AFL ANKLE INJURY
- We recommend visiting a physiotherapist for treatment and advice on treating common AFL injuries. They may recommend the following treatments.
- Strains or Sprains. Many sprains and strains can be treated with the RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. A good physiotherapist can assist with the recovery however prevention is always better than cure.
- Runner’s Knee. This is the common name for patellofemoral pain syndrome. This is often due to abnormal mechanics caused by problems close to the knee, forcing the patella to bump against the femoral groove. We recommend speaking with a running specific physiotherapist, they will usually review your running form as well tissue and musculature.
- Stress Fractures. Consult a sports medicine doctor X-rays. Recommended treatments include rest, anti-inflammatory medication, stretching, and muscle strengthening exercise. Stress fractures take about six weeks to heal.
