WHY SHOULD YOU WEAR A KNEE BRACE WHILE CYCLING OR BIKING?

Wearing a Bauerfeind brace or knee support can minimise your chances of a cycling injury by providing enhanced stability, proprioception and moisture-wicking medical-grade compression.

A study conducted with 116 professional cyclists reported that 94 per cent experienced overuse injury over the period of a year, and 23 per cent of those riders reported knee pain. Wearing a knee brace while cycling or biking can aid in preventing and avoiding cycling injuries.

Cycling poses high pressure on knees due to the repeated movement of the knees when peddling. Bauerfeind knee braces help to promote healing with the use of medical grade compression.

Medical-grade compression depleted the lactic acid build up from repeated motion and stimulates muscle regeneration.

MENS MAGAZINE GQ LOVES BAUERFEIND PRODUCTS

Jess Campbell from GQ reviewed Bauerfeind compression gear and sports supports, "Whether you’re running, cycling, walking, or simply going through a gym circuit, the effects of Bauerfeind are instant and more noticeable than any compression gear I’ve worn in the past.

Prone to little niggles around the knee and nursing an ongoing calf-strain, I found my muscles to feel stabilised throughout the duration of activity. During my workout, my legs felt supported and better able to adapt to changes of pace and direction".

Test out our Sports knee support and calf compression sleeves for your next cycling adventures. The added knee support will help stabilise your joint without limiting your ability to pedal, ride in a peloton or attack your next hill.

IS CYCLING GOOD FOR YOUR KNEES?

Cycling is non weight bearing on your knees and therefore it is better for your knee joints compared to running. It doesn’t cause as much muscle soreness and irritation as other high impact sports. Additionally, cyclists knee and Patella and Quadriceps tendinitis are common with overuse, especially when cleats are not fastened correctly to the pedals. Braces can help reduce the pain post ride, cycling insoles can help address the issue as well.

HOW TO TREAT A CYCLING KNEE INJURY

We recommend seeking treatment from a physiotherapist on treating a cycling injury. They may recommend one the following treatments.

    • Strains or Sprains. Many sprains and strains can be treated with the RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. A good physiotherapist can assist with the recovery however prevention is always better than cure.
    • Ligament Tearing. Ligament tears generally always require surgery. A torn ligament rebuild uses a graft of tissue as the ligament will not generally heal properly otherwise. Surgery is often minimally invasive, however it can take time for the tear to heal.
Play it safe: Consult a doctor if you experience unusually intense and persistent knee pain.
