Best Knee Braces For AFL

WHY SHOULD I WEAR A KNEE BRACE WHILE PLAYING AFL?

AFL is known for its high level of physical body contact. Some of the most common forms of injury while playing AFL include runner’s knee, hamstring strain, ACL strain and contusion.

By not wearing any protection except for the occasional mouth guard, players are at a high risk of injury. Common causes include collision, overuse, unstable landings and sharp movement.

According to AFL Injury Survey, knee injuries have the highest occurrence and recurrence rate.

Take a look at Warringah Rugby Club player Tyson Davis who underwent surgery after an AFL game. He was fitted with Bauerfeind compression and supports for faster recovery and improved performance. Bauerfeind helped him get back on the ground within 54 days, what would usually have taken 3-4 months.

HOW CAN I PREVENT OR AVOID A KNEE INJURY DURING AFL?

Wearing a Bauerfeind brace or knee support can minimise your chances of an AFL injury by providing enhanced stability and proprioception.

Bauerfeind knee braces help to promote blood flow with the use of our 3D weaved medical grade compression, something not found when using simple neoprene sleeves and braces.

This added support will help stabilise your joint without limiting your ability to handball, hospital kick, and score goals.

WHY DO MY KNEES HURT DURING AFL?

AFL is a high contact sport with body collisions occurring from all directions at quick speeds. It is rare for padding and protection to be worn thus increasing one’s risk of injury. Often, a player may move in a way that places high stress on the knee, causing an injury.

HOW TO TREAT AN AFL KNEE INJURY?

    • Strains or Sprains. Many sprains and strains can often be treated with the RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. A physiotherapist can assist with the recovery as well. If the sprain is more severe you may require surgery.
    • Runner’s Knee. This is the common name for patellofemoral pain syndrome. This is often due to abnormal mechanics caused by problems close to the knee, forcing the patella to bump against the femoral groove. We recommend speaking with a running specific physiotherapist, they will usually review your running form as well tissue and musculature.
    • Meniscal Tearing. Simple meniscal tears may be treated with the RICE method and anti-inflammatory medications. Advanced tears may require surgery. Muscle weakness or incoordination can predispose you to a ligament sprain or tear.

Play it safe: Consult a doctor if you experience unusually intense and persistent tendonitis pain.
